Tucked between the southern coast of Iran and the northern tip of Oman lies a slender stretch of water that, despite measuring barely 33 kilometres across at its narrowest point, holds enormous sway over the global economy. This is the Strait of Hormuz — a maritime chokepoint so critical that even brief disruptions to traffic through it can send oil prices soaring, rattle stock markets, and force governments thousands of kilometres away into emergency planning mode. For India, a country that imports the overwhelming majority of its crude oil and a significant share of its natural gas, the Strait of Hormuz is not an abstract geopolitical flashpoint. It is a lifeline that directly shapes fuel prices at the pump, the cost of cooking gas in millions of homes, and the broader trajectory of the Indian economy.
This article explains what the Strait of Hormuz is, why it occupies such an outsized place in global energy geography, and why developments there — including the tensions that have repeatedly flared in the Gulf through 2025 and 2026 — carry such weight for India.
What Is the Strait of Hormuz?
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow channel connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and, beyond that, to the Arabian Sea and the open waters of the Indian Ocean. It is the only sea passage out of the Persian Gulf, which means every tanker carrying oil or gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Iran must pass through it to reach international markets. On one side lies Iran; on the other, Oman's Musandam peninsula. The shipping lanes themselves are even narrower than the strait as a whole, with vessels confined to a two-mile-wide channel in each direction, separated by a two-mile buffer zone, to avoid territorial disputes between Iran and Oman.
Despite its modest width, the strait carries a staggering volume of energy traffic. According to the International Energy Agency, an average of around 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and oil products moved through the Strait of Hormuz in 2025, accounting for roughly a quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade. It is one of the world's most critical oil transit chokepoints, and with options to bypass it being limited, any disruption to flows through the strait would have huge consequences for world oil markets. While Saudi Arabia and the UAE have some oil export routes that avoid the strait, other countries including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain rely on it to deliver the vast majority of their oil exports.
The strait isn't just about crude oil. A closure would also have major implications for global gas trade, since it would strand LNG exports from Qatar and the UAE, which together represent almost a fifth of global LNG exports. Qatar, in particular, is one of the world's largest LNG exporters, and virtually all of its gas leaves by sea through this single corridor.
Why the Strait Is So Hard to Bypass
One of the reasons disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz generate such alarm is that there is no easy way around it. A handful of overland pipelines exist that allow Gulf producers to move some oil to coastal terminals outside the strait. Saudi Arabia's East-West Crude Pipeline, running from Abqaiq to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, has a design capacity of around 5 million barrels per day, with Aramco reporting expanded capacity closer to 7 million barrels per day, though that level has not been fully tested in sustained operation. The UAE similarly exports roughly 1.1 million barrels per day of crude through a pipeline that bypasses the strait, with room for some additional volume. But these pipelines belong only to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Altogether, the available alternative pipeline capacity is estimated at only 3.5 to 5.5 million barrels per day — a fraction of the 20 million barrels per day that normally moves by sea through the strait. Countries like Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Qatar have essentially no alternative route; if the strait closes, their exports stop.
This structural rigidity is what makes the Strait of Hormuz so strategically powerful — and so easily weaponised. Iran, which borders the strait along its entire northern edge, has periodically threatened to close it during periods of heightened tension with the United States and its allies, most recently amid the broader Iran-related conflict that intensified in early 2026.
Why It Matters to India
India is one of the world's largest oil importers, sourcing the vast majority of its crude needs from abroad to fuel an economy of over 1.4 billion people. Historically, a very large share of that oil — along with much of India's imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas — has travelled through the Strait of Hormuz from Gulf suppliers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar.
The scale of dependence
Before the disruptions of 2026 forced a rapid recalibration, India's reliance on Hormuz-linked supply was deep and layered. Data from commodity tracking firm Kpler showed that India's dependence on the strait had surged to around 50 percent of its total crude imports in the run-up to the crisis, even as the country tried to diversify away from Russian supply amid tightening sanctions. Part of the structural response involved expanding port capacity to receive non-Hormuz supply at scale, including the launch of India's first very-large-crude-carrier terminal at Mundra in January 2026, alongside deeper logistics partnerships with suppliers in the Americas and West Africa.
To manage the strain on the gas side, the central government issued a Natural Gas Control Order on March 9, 2026, under the Essential Commodities Act, ensuring that domestic piped natural gas and CNG for vehicles continued to receive full allocations while industrial users connected to the gas grid faced moderated supplies, and sectors like fertilizers, refineries, and petrochemicals saw controlled reductions to protect priority users.
Why even partial dependence is risky
It's worth noting that diversifying suppliers is not the same as escaping the route. As one energy analysis pointed out, source diversification and route dependency are not identical — India can buy oil from a wider mix of countries, yet still rely on shipping lanes that pass through the same narrow chokepoint. Even after India's reported shift to 70 percent non-Hormuz sourcing, a meaningful share of crude — and a larger share of LNG and LPG — still depends on the strait remaining open and safe for navigation. Globally, China and India together received 44 percent of all crude oil and natural gas exports passing through the Strait of Hormuz in 2024, underlining how central both countries remain to the corridor's traffic, regardless of short-term sourcing adjustments.
The human dimension also matters. With 28 Indian-flagged vessels operating in the region and 778 Indian seafarers onboard as of March 2026, Indian shipping authorities had to establish a 24-hour monitoring system to track vessel movements and coordinate assistance if required, while advising crews to adopt enhanced security procedures. Beyond economics, the safety of Indian citizens working in and around the Gulf is directly tied to the stability of this waterway.
Broader Economic and Strategic Stakes
Even a partial or short-lived disruption to Hormuz traffic ripples through the Indian economy in predictable ways: higher crude prices feed directly into the cost of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel; elevated freight and insurance costs for tankers navigating a contested strait add further expense; and a weaker rupee, often a side effect of a larger oil import bill, makes everything from electronics to fertiliser more expensive to import. Because India imports the vast majority of its crude needs, even modest disruptions can have outsized effects on inflation, the current account deficit, and government fuel subsidy budgets.
Strategically, India has also leaned on its naval presence and diplomatic ties in the Gulf to safeguard its interests, while pursuing longer-term initiatives like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor to build alternative trade and energy linkages that reduce single-point dependency over time. These are not quick fixes, but they reflect a recognition that India's energy security cannot rest indefinitely on a single, geopolitically volatile waterway.
