Iran Retaliates Against US Targets
Tehran/Washington, June 3: Tensions between Iran and the United States escalated sharply on Wednesday as Iran launched missile and drone attacks against American military assets in the Gulf region, marking a significant deterioration in an already fragile security situation.According to Iranian media reports, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted facilities linked to the U.S. military, including the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and other regional installations. Tehran said the attacks were carried out in retaliation for recent U.S. strikes on military sites near Iran's strategic Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military stated that several Iranian missiles and drones were intercepted before reaching their intended targets. Washington described its earlier actions as "self-defense" measures aimed at protecting American forces and commercial shipping routes in the Gulf.
The latest exchange comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. While President Donald Trump has maintained that negotiations remain possible, Iranian officials have indicated that communication channels have largely frozen in recent days, raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation.
Regional governments have increased security measures as the conflict threatens stability across the Gulf. Missile alerts and air-defense activations were reported in several countries hosting American military facilities. The renewed hostilities have also pushed global oil prices higher amid fears of disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy corridors.
International observers have called for restraint, warning that continued military exchanges could undermine efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire and further destabilize the Middle East.
