Seychelles | March 2026 — India and Seychelles have launched the 11th edition of the joint military exercise “Exercise Lamitiye 2026”, marking a significant step in strengthening

bilateral defence cooperation and operational coordination.

What is Exercise Lamitiye?

“Lamitiye,” meaning “Friendship” in Creole, reflects the close strategic partnership between the two nations. The exercise is a biennial military drill conducted since 2001 between the Indian Armed Forces and the Seychelles Defence Forces. 

Key Highlights of Lamitiye 2026

  • Conducted from March 9 to March 20, 2026 at the Seychelles Defence Academy 

  • Marks the 11th edition of the joint exercise 

  • Features tri-service participation from India — Army, Navy, and Air Force for the first time 

  • Includes participation of:

    • Indian Army troops (including Assam Regiment)

    • Indian Navy warship INS Trikand

    • Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft 

Focus Areas of the Exercise

The joint drills are designed to enhance:

  • Interoperability between forces

  • Sub-conventional operations in semi-urban environments

  • Counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism tactics

  • Peacekeeping coordination 

Troops from both nations are engaging in:

  • Field training exercises

  • Tactical drills and combat discussions

  • Case studies and demonstrations

  • A final validation exercise to test operational readiness

Seychelles holds a crucial position in the Indian Ocean region, making it an important partner in India’s maritime security strategy. The exercise reinforces India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision and highlights growing defence ties in the region.
