300 Stranded Mid-Air In Gulmarg

 Report by Y-Trendz

A major accident was narrowly avoided in Jammu and Kashmir’s famous tourist destination Gulmarg after a technical snag halted the Gondola cable car service, leaving nearly 300 tourists stranded mid-air for several hours.

According to local reports, the malfunction occurred on Monday during operations of the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable car systems and a major attraction in Kashmir tourism. The service reportedly stopped suddenly due to a technical fault, triggering panic among tourists suspended inside cabins high above the mountainous terrain.

Officials said emergency response teams and technicians immediately began rescue and restoration operations. Authorities later confirmed that all stranded tourists were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The Gulmarg Gondola is considered one of Asia’s most iconic ropeway systems, carrying visitors from Gulmarg to Kongdori and further toward Apharwat Peak at high altitude. The attraction draws thousands of domestic and international tourists every year, especially during skiing and summer tourism seasons.

Eyewitnesses described tense scenes as families, including children, remained trapped inside the cable car cabins while officials worked to restore operations. Videos circulating on social media showed gondola cabins hanging motionless over steep valleys and snow-covered slopes.

Authorities appealed to the public not to panic, stating that trained staff and technical experts handled the situation according to safety protocols.

The incident has once again raised concerns regarding maintenance, operational safety, and emergency preparedness at high-altitude tourist infrastructure facilities. Gulmarg Gondola has witnessed technical disruptions in the past, though services were later restored following safety checks.

Tourism officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection before fully resuming normal operations.

The incident comes at a time when Kashmir’s tourism sector has been witnessing strong tourist inflow, with Gulmarg remaining one of the region’s biggest attractions for skiing, snow tourism, and mountain adventure activities.
