“BRICS Ministers Meet in Delhi.”
Report by Y-Trendz
India is hosting the two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 14–15, marking the first major ministerial engagement under India’s 2026 BRICS chairmanship. The high-level gathering comes at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and growing calls for reform of global institutions.
The meeting is being chaired by S. Jaishankar, with foreign ministers and senior delegates from BRICS member and partner nations participating in crucial discussions on global security, trade, sustainability, innovation, and multilateral reforms.
India at the Centre of Global Diplomacy
The summit places India firmly at the centre of emerging global diplomacy as it leads the expanded BRICS grouping during a period of rapid geopolitical change. India officially assumed the BRICS chairmanship in January 2026 and is expected to host the 18th BRICS Summit later this year in New Delhi.
The theme under India’s presidency is:
“Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Officials say the meeting aims to strengthen coordination among Global South nations and deepen cooperation on development finance, digital infrastructure, energy transition, and reforms of international governance institutions.
War in West Asia Dominates Agenda
The ongoing conflict in West Asia is expected to dominate discussions during the meeting. Reports indicate that BRICS members are attempting to formulate a common position on the regional crisis amid growing international concern.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in New Delhi ahead of the talks, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also held discussions with Indian officials before the summit.
According to reports, divisions within the expanded BRICS bloc — especially differing views among member countries on the Iran conflict — may make consensus-building difficult. Still, diplomats are hopeful of producing a joint statement reflecting shared concerns over regional stability, energy security, and economic disruptions.
Expanded BRICS Takes Shape
The BRICS grouping has expanded significantly beyond its original five members. The current bloc includes:
Brazil
Russia
India
China
South Africa
Egypt
Ethiopia
Indonesia
Iran
United Arab Emirates
The expanded grouping now represents a substantial share of the world’s population, energy resources, and emerging-market economies, increasing its influence in shaping debates on global governance.
Focus on Global Governance Reforms
A major focus of the New Delhi discussions will be reforms of institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, IMF, and international financial systems. BRICS nations have repeatedly argued that global institutions still reflect post-World War II power structures and do not adequately represent developing economies.
Sessions during the meeting include:
“BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”
“Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System”
Strategic Significance for India
For India, the summit is also an opportunity to project leadership among emerging economies while balancing relations with major global powers. Analysts believe New Delhi will attempt to position BRICS as a platform focused on development cooperation rather than geopolitical confrontation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to interact with participating delegations during the summit proceedings.
Looking Ahead
The Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is expected to shape the roadmap for the larger BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled later this year in New Delhi. The outcome of the Delhi talks could influence future cooperation on trade, energy, technology, digital payments, climate action, and international security.
As the world moves toward a more multipolar order, the New Delhi gathering is being closely watched as a test of whether BRICS can evolve from an economic coalition into a stronger geopolitical force.
