Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled that the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict may be “coming to an end,” raising fresh speculation about a possible diplomatic breakthrough

after more than four years of war. The remarks came during Russia’s Victory Day events in Moscow, where Putin addressed reporters following a scaled-down military parade at Red Square.

According to multiple international reports, Putin indicated that Moscow is now open to direct negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, possibly in a neutral country. He stated that discussions could move forward if a broader long-term peace framework is achieved.

The statement has emerged amid a fragile three-day ceasefire reportedly brokered with international mediation support, including diplomatic efforts backed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Russia and Ukraine have also agreed to conduct a major prisoner exchange involving nearly 1,000 prisoners from each side — one of the largest swaps since the war escalated in 2022.

Despite the optimistic tone, fighting has not completely stopped. Both Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of violating the temporary truce through drone strikes and artillery attacks across frontline regions. Ukrainian officials claim Russian attacks continued in several eastern sectors, while Russia alleges Ukraine committed hundreds of ceasefire violations.

Observers believe the Kremlin’s softer rhetoric reflects growing geopolitical and economic pressures on Russia. Analysts point to the noticeably reduced Victory Day parade this year, where heavy military hardware was largely absent from Red Square for security reasons. The shorter parade and toned-down military display were seen by many as symbolic of the war’s mounting costs and Russia’s shifting priorities.

However, major obstacles to peace remain unresolved. Russia continues to insist on strategic conditions linked to disputed territories in eastern Ukraine, while Kyiv maintains that sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable. Western governments remain cautious, warning that previous ceasefires and humanitarian pauses have collapsed quickly amid mutual distrust.

International diplomatic circles are now closely watching whether the latest statements from Putin represent a genuine opening for negotiations or merely a tactical pause in the conflict. While hopes for peace have risen, the situation on the battlefield remains volatile and unpredictable.
