AIADMK Rift Deepens as C.Ve. Shanmugam Backs TVK
Senior C. Ve. Shanmugam has declared that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam faction led by him is “not in alliance with any party except TVK,” signaling a major political
realignment in Tamil Nadu politics. The statement comes amid escalating internal tensions within the AIADMK following the 2026 Assembly election setback.
Shanmugam, along with senior AIADMK leader S. P. Velumani, has reportedly extended support to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Their move is being viewed as a direct challenge to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, popularly known as EPS.
According to reports, Shanmugam rejected speculation about any understanding with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, calling the DMK an “evil force.” He also indicated that many AIADMK MLAs were unhappy with suggestions that the party could seek outside support from the DMK after the elections.
The development has exposed widening cracks inside the AIADMK legislature party. Reports suggest that a sizeable group of MLAs may now align with the Velumani–Shanmugam camp, potentially weakening EPS’s authority within the party.
Politically, the statement is significant because AIADMK had earlier been associated with the BJP-led NDA in Tamil Nadu. Shanmugam’s latest remarks are being interpreted as a clear distancing from both the BJP and the DMK, while opening a channel toward Vijay’s rapidly rising TVK.
The coming floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly is now expected to become the first major test of strength for the newly formed TVK government, while also determining the future balance of power inside the AIADMK.
