Suvendu Adhikari’s Aide Shot Dead at Point-Blank Range

A major political storm erupted in West Bengal after Chandranath Rath, a close aide and executive assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead at point-blank range in
Madhyamgram’s Doharia area of North 24 Parganas late Wednesday night. The killing has intensified tensions in the state amid ongoing post-election violence.
According to preliminary reports, Rath was travelling in a Scorpio vehicle when motorcycle-borne attackers intercepted the SUV near Madhyamgram around 10:20 PM. Assailants reportedly approached the vehicle and fired multiple rounds through the window at extremely close range before fleeing the scene. Another aide travelling in the vehicle sustained serious injuries.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as “highly coordinated” and “pre-planned,” claiming the shooters appeared to have tracked Rath’s movement before launching the assault. Reports suggest multiple bikes and armed men were involved in the ambush.
Reacting strongly, Suvendu Adhikari termed the incident a “cold-blooded” and “pre-planned murder.” He alleged that the attackers had conducted reconnaissance for “two to three days” before executing the killing. Adhikari also claimed the nature of the operation showed professional planning.
The incident comes just days after the highly charged 2026 assembly election results in West Bengal, where political clashes and allegations of post-poll violence have already triggered widespread concern. BJP leaders accused ruling party workers of creating an atmosphere of intimidation, while the All India Trinamool Congress condemned the murder and demanded a court-monitored CBI probe.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from nearby roads and intersections. Senior officials stated that special teams have been formed to identify the shooters and determine the motive behind the attack.
Chandranath Rath, a former Indian Air Force veteran, had been associated closely with Suvendu Adhikari for several years and was considered one of his most trusted aides within the BJP’s Bengal unit.
