 BJP Leader and Two Others Burnt Alive Inside SUV Over Sand Mining Dispute

KORIYA, CHHATTISGARH — In a horrifying escalation of resource-driven gang warfare, a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and two of his associates were brutally burnt alive late Tuesday night in Chhattisgarh’s Koriya district. The targeted ambush, which investigators explicitly link to a bitter, long-running dispute over illegal sand mining and transport operations, has sent shockwaves through the state's political landscape.

The principal victim has been identified as Bharat Singh, popularly known as Lalla Singh, a prominent local BJP leader and the former Janpad Panchayat President. Two others who were trapped inside the vehicle—identified as Virendra Singh and Nagendra Singh, a local school teacher who was also Bharat Singh’s cousin—succumbed to the attack. A fourth occupant, Mayank Singh, miraculously survived the initial inferno but remains in highly critical condition at Apollo Hospital in Bilaspur.

The Ambush: Trapped and Torched

The lethal confrontation unfolded around 9:30 PM near Naugain village, located within the jurisdiction of the Sonhat police station. According to police officials, Bharat Singh and his aides had driven out in a Toyota Fortuner SUV following a tense phone conversation to negotiate a settlement regarding local sand transportation contracts with a rival faction.

However, the meeting turned out to be a meticulously planned death trap. As the SUV traveled down a stretch of road in Naugain, it was suddenly intercepted.

"The attackers strategically used heavy tipper trucks to block the road, sandwiching the BJP leader's Fortuner from both the front and rear," a senior police official stated. "Escape was made entirely impossible."

With the SUV immobilized, a light tipper truck repeatedly rammed into the vehicle, heavily damaging its frame and effectively jamming the doors from the outside. Assailants then allegedly doused the trapped vehicle with petrol before setting it ablaze.

While Bharat Singh died at the spot inside the burning wreckage, Nagendra Singh and Virendra Singh suffered catastrophic burn and trauma injuries. Virendra Singh reportedly also sustained deep slash wounds to his neck as attackers allegedly struck those trying to break free. Both men later succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to specialized medical centers in Raipur and Ambikapur.

The Investigation: Sand Mafia Feud Exposed

Surguja Range Inspector General of Police, Deepak Jha, alongside Additional Superintendent of Police, Suresha Choubey, rushed to the crime scene with a forensic task force to assess the charred remains of the vehicle and map the area.

Preliminary inquiries have confirmed that the violence stems from an intense, months-old rivalry over the control of lucrative sand quarry contracts and revenue-sharing between two influential local groups: the Thakur faction (associated with Bharat Singh) and the Tripathi faction. While Singh's family held certain quarrying rights, the rival group managed the logistics and tipper trucks, leading to violent friction over transportation fees.

Police Action and FIR Details:

• Total Accused: An First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against nine named individuals under severe charges, including Section 302 (Murder), Section 307 (Attempt to Murder), Arson, and Vandalism.

• Arrests Made: Swift raids conducted by special police teams have led to the apprehension of four primary accused: Akshat Tripathi, Vishal Tripathi, Satyaprakash Tripathi, and Mannu Tripathi.

• Absconders: A massive manhunt is underway across neighboring districts to capture the remaining five suspects who fled the scene immediately after the attack.

High Political Tensions and Demands for a CBI Probe

The gruesome triple homicide has sparked immense outrage, leading to a massive deployment of paramilitary and state police forces across Koriya district to prevent retaliatory violence.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep grief and anger over the incident, asserting that the state will take unyielding action. "The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared under any circumstances. Law enforcement has been given a free hand to clean up the illegal elements operating in the region," the Chief Minister declared.

Meanwhile, the grieving family of Bharat Singh has openly rejected the local administration's preliminary scope, alleging a deeper, pre-planned political conspiracy. They have formally demanded an immediate investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), claiming that local sand mafias operate with institutional backing that requires federal scrutiny.
