CoBRA Commandos Deployed in Manipur

to Strengthen Security Operations

Report by Y-Trendz

In a significant move aimed at restoring stability in Manipur, the Central Government has deployed elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) units of the Central Reserve Police Force

(CRPF) to undertake specialized operations in the violence-affected state. The deployment comes amid continued security concerns and renewed efforts to curb armed violence and maintain law and order.

According to official reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the deployment of two CoBRA battalions—207 Battalion based in West Bengal and 210 Battalion based in Assam. These highly trained units are expected to conduct targeted operations against armed groups involved in violence and insurgent activities.

CoBRA is the CRPF's elite jungle warfare force, raised in 2008–09 to combat Left-Wing Extremism and insurgency. The commandos are specially trained in guerrilla warfare, intelligence-based operations, survival in dense forests, and counter-insurgency tactics. Their operational success in anti-Maoist campaigns has earned them a reputation as one of India's most effective specialized forces.

Reports indicate that hundreds of CoBRA personnel have already reached Manipur, while additional units are expected to arrive in phases. The commandos will undergo orientation and familiarization with the state's terrain before commencing full-scale operations. Security agencies believe their expertise in jungle warfare and counter-insurgency will be valuable in addressing the complex security challenges in the region.

The deployment coincides with an intensified security review by the Centre and senior CRPF leadership. CRPF Director General Gyanendra Pratap Singh recently visited Manipur and reviewed the prevailing security situation with state authorities.

Officials say the objective of deploying CoBRA units is to support peace restoration efforts, strengthen counter-insurgency capabilities, and improve security in sensitive areas. The move is also expected to enhance coordination among various security forces operating in the state.

Security analysts view the arrival of CoBRA commandos as a major reinforcement of the government's strategy to tackle violence and maintain stability in Manipur. Their deployment underscores the Centre's determination to address security challenges through specialized and intelligence-driven operations.

Bottom Line: The induction of elite CoBRA commandos marks a significant escalation in security preparedness in Manipur. With their proven expertise in counter-insurgency and jungle warfare, the force is expected to play an important role in supporting peace and stability efforts across the state.
