Hotels Inspection Drive Launched

Across Delhi After Deadly Fire Tragedy

Fire Safety Essentials

New Delhi, June 5: Authorities in the national capital have launched a massive inspection drive targeting hotels, guest houses, lodges, restaurants, and other commercial establishments following the

devastating hotel fire in South Delhi that claimed 21 lives earlier this week. The month-long enforcement campaign aims to identify fire safety violations and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The inspection drive was ordered by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu after an emergency review meeting with senior officials. Authorities have directed fire, police, municipal, and district administration teams to conduct comprehensive checks of vulnerable commercial establishments across the city.

Officials said all hotels, lodges, inns, nursing homes, coaching institutes, and restaurants will be examined for compliance with fire safety norms. Properties found operating beyond approved capacity or without mandatory clearances may face closure, sealing, or legal action.

The crackdown follows the deadly blaze at a hotel in Delhi's Malviya Nagar area, where investigators have uncovered serious safety lapses. Preliminary findings indicate that the establishment was allegedly operating without a valid Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) and had expanded far beyond its permitted capacity.

In addition to inspections, authorities have ordered fire safety audits of hotels and other public buildings. Teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, and civic agencies have also been tasked with identifying access bottlenecks that could delay emergency response vehicles during future incidents.

The Delhi government has formed joint inspection committees comprising officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), district administration, police, and other departments. The exercise is expected to cover hundreds of hotels, bed-and-breakfast establishments, and guest houses across the city.

Meanwhile, the MCD has initiated a parallel sealing drive against unauthorized commercial establishments found violating building regulations and licence conditions. Officials warned that strict action would be taken against operators who fail to comply with safety requirements.

Authorities say the inspection campaign is intended not only to enforce compliance but also to restore public confidence in the safety of commercial accommodations in the capital. The findings of the inspections are expected to shape future reforms in fire safety enforcement and urban building regulation.
