12-Year-Old Girl Found Dead in Baruipur, Man Lynched Over Rape-Murder Suspicion

Kolkata — The discovery of a young girl's body in a pond in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, has triggered violent unrest across the area, with an angry mob beating a suspect to death even as police

work to piece together the circumstances of her killing and identify all those responsible.

What Happened

According to police accounts, the girl went missing on Saturday after she left home to buy a gift for a friend's birthday. Her family has said she never returned, and that four individuals had forcibly taken her away. Relatives have also alleged that police did not respond adequately when they sought help during an overnight search for her.

On Sunday morning, local residents apprehended one of the suspects themselves. Police said the individual, under questioning, revealed the location of the girl's body, which was then recovered from a pond in the Surjyapur Haat area, stuffed inside a sack. The discovery set off immediate and widespread anger in the community.

Mob Violence and Lynching

The recovery of the body sparked large protests, with residents blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road and disrupting train services on the Namkhana-Sealdah line for several hours. Demonstrators burned tyres, damaged police vehicles, and demanded the immediate arrest of everyone involved in the crime.

Amid the chaos, a man accused by local residents of direct involvement in the crime was beaten by an angry mob and later died. Kankarprasad Barui, Inspector General of Police for the Presidency Range, confirmed that the man was attacked following allegations of his involvement in the girl's rape and murder. Police have not yet confirmed whether he was, in fact, connected to the crime, and the death has raised its own set of questions about accountability and due process even as public anger over the girl's death runs high.

Several police personnel and journalists were injured during the clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Officers eventually persuaded protesters to lift the road and rail blockades after the Inspector General assured the crowd that action would be taken against all those responsible.

Investigation So Far

Police have since arrested two people in direct connection with the girl's murder, while an additional suspect who was apprehended by local residents has been handed over to law enforcement for questioning. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to lead the probe. Investigators are continuing to search for the remaining individuals allegedly involved in the abduction and killing.

The case has taken on an added political dimension after a local BJP worker, identified as Shantanu Mandal, was also detained in connection with the case. He is alleged to have attempted to influence police into releasing suspects who had briefly been in custody, a claim that has fueled criticism of the state administration's handling of the case.

The girl's body was sent to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and police say the investigation into both the murder and the mob attack on the accused man is ongoing. Senior officers have said that additional security has been deployed across the area to prevent further outbreaks of violence, and that the role of those involved in the attacks on police personnel during the protests is also being examined.

Political Fallout

The case has quickly become a flashpoint in West Bengal's political landscape. Trinamool Congress Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee criticized the ruling BJP state government over the incident, writing on social media, "BJP came to Bengal promising women's safety and security. Instead, every such incident raises fresh questions about its hollow promises." He further alleged that political connections may be influencing the investigation, adding, "the BJP doesn't just fail women, it fosters a climate where those accused of heinous crimes appear to believe they enjoy political protection."

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke with the victim's father by telephone and assured him that those responsible would face the strictest possible punishment under the law. He is reported to have invited the grieving father to meet him at Nabanna on Tuesday to discuss the case further and to offer all possible assistance from the state government.

Broader Concerns

The episode has reignited concerns in West Bengal over both the safety of children and the risks of mob justice overtaking formal legal processes. While the public anger driving the protests reflects deep frustration over crimes against minors, officials and legal observers have cautioned that the death of a suspect at the hands of a mob complicates the pursuit of justice, potentially undermining the very accountability that protesters are demanding. The outcome of the SIT's investigation, along with the post-mortem findings, will likely determine both the direction of the criminal case and the intensity of the political debate that has already emerged around it.
