Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy

JV Secures $560 Million EPC Order for 1,000 MW Solar Project in Egypt

Report By Y-Trendz

Mumbai — June 30, 2026

Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL), through its 50-50 joint venture with Hassan Allam Construction, has secured an EPC order valued at approximately $560 million for the West

Minya Solar Power Project in Egypt's Minya Governorate. Once completed, the 1,000 MWac solar photovoltaic project, integrated with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), is set to become one of Egypt's largest utility-scale renewable energy developments.

Scope of the Project

Under the engineering, procurement, and construction contract, the Hassan Allam Construction–SWREL joint venture will handle the complete delivery of the solar power plant. This includes installation of photovoltaic generation facilities, battery energy storage infrastructure, grid interconnection works, transmission facilities, and all associated balance-of-plant and supporting systems required to bring the project online. The scale of the undertaking — combining gigawatt-level solar generation with a large battery storage component — places it among the more technically complex renewable projects currently under development in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The West Minya project is being developed by Hassan Allam Utilities' Energy Platform in partnership with international investors including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Meridiam, and Infinity Power Holding. Hassan Allam Holding, the parent of Hassan Allam Construction, noted that more than half of its overall portfolio is backed by foreign investors, a reflection of the company's role in channeling international capital into Egypt's infrastructure and energy sectors.

Company Statements

Commenting on the win, Chandra Kishore Thakur, Global CEO of Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Group, said the company was proud to support Egypt's decarbonization efforts and to contribute to strengthening energy security across the wider MENA region. He added that the company's expertise and execution track record would help unlock the region's renewable energy potential, and reaffirmed a commitment to delivering the project on schedule while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and operational performance.

The company also highlighted that this marks its third gigawatt-scale order in the span of nine months, a pattern it says reflects growing customer confidence in its ability to deliver large, technically demanding solar projects that incorporate advanced battery storage technology.

Strategic Significance for Egypt

Once operational, the West Minya facility is expected to feed clean electricity into Egypt's national grid, supporting the country's broader push to expand renewable energy capacity and meet its climate commitments. The integration of a 600 MWh battery storage system alongside the solar array is designed to improve grid reliability by allowing renewable electricity to be stored and dispatched as needed, helping reduce Egypt's dependence on conventional power generation and easing integration challenges that come with large-scale solar deployment.

The award also underscores Egypt's growing appeal as a destination for renewable energy investment, with the involvement of institutions such as the EBRD and private investors like Meridiam and Infinity Power Holding signaling continued international confidence in the country's energy transition plans.

Market Reaction

News of the order win moved markets in India, where Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy is listed. Shares of the company rose sharply following the announcement, with reports noting a jump of around 7 percent on the back of the deal. The stock had been trading lower earlier in the session amid broader weakness in Indian benchmark indices, with the Nifty 50 declining on the day, before the order news helped drive gains in the counter.

Company Background

Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy is a global pure-play renewable EPC company offering end-to-end engineering, procurement, and construction solutions across utility-scale solar, floating solar, hybrid, battery storage, and wind projects. The company says it has executed or is currently constructing a combined portfolio exceeding 27.3 GWp of capacity, alongside an operations and maintenance portfolio of 13.5 GWp spanning 28 countries.

The Egypt win adds to a string of recent international orders for the company, including an earlier turnkey EPC contract for a 240 MWac solar PV project in South Africa valued at roughly $147 million, part of a broader expansion of its footprint across African renewable energy markets. Earlier this year, the company also issued a $34 million parent company guarantee to support working capital needs for its South African solar operations.

Outlook

With the West Minya award, Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy continues to build out its order book in high-growth international markets, particularly in regions prioritizing renewable capacity additions paired with battery storage. Analysts tracking the company's order momentum note that repeated gigawatt-scale wins in a short span point to strengthening execution credibility in a segment where complex, storage-integrated solar projects are becoming increasingly common. The project's progress will likely be watched closely as an indicator of both the company's growing international footprint and Egypt's broader renewable energy ambitions.
