logistics hubs after a Russian strike hit the facility in the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast, sending towering flames and thick black smoke over the region.

Direct Hit Sparks Fast-Spreading Blaze

The attack struck in the overnight hours between July 18 and 19, when Russian forces targeted logistics infrastructure in the Kyiv region. The strike hit what is believed to be the Antel logistics center, a sprawling storage complex in the Bucha district that has become a symbol of the war's continued toll on Ukraine's civilian supply chains. The fire tore through two separate warehouse buildings, engulfing a combined area of roughly 100,000 square metres — an expanse comparable to more than a dozen football fields.

Because the warehouses were packed with large volumes of stored goods and materials, the flames spread with extraordinary speed once the buildings were struck, turning the complex into an inferno within minutes. Emergency crews arriving at the scene were confronted with a fire so large that ground units alone could not contain it, prompting the deployment of a full-scale air-and-ground firefighting operation.

Three Helicopters Join Ground Crews in the Fight

The scale of the response reflected the severity of the blaze. More than 200 firefighters and 73 units of specialized firefighting equipment were mobilized to the site, working through the night to keep the fire from spreading further into surrounding structures. Three helicopters were brought in to support the ground effort, making repeated aerial water drops onto the burning warehouses in an effort to knock down the flames from above while crews on the ground worked to encircle the perimeter of the blaze.

By around 10:30 the following morning, emergency officials announced that the fire had been brought under control, though full extinguishing and mop-up operations continued for hours afterward as crews worked to prevent the fire from reigniting in pockets of smouldering debris. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv Oblast, which led the response, said the operation remained ongoing even after the blaze was contained, given the size of the site and the volume of combustible material still smouldering inside the damaged structures.

Casualties and Damage Assessment

Two people were injured in the strike and subsequent fire. Regional police reported that the attack damaged five storage facilities in the Bucha district outright, while two additional storage buildings were completely destroyed by the flames. One of the injured, a man, was hospitalised for treatment, while a woman who was also hurt in the incident received medical care at the scene.

The same night, Russian forces also struck the production facilities of UKRTAC, a Ukrainian manufacturer of ballistic protection equipment, in a separate direct missile strike, underscoring the breadth of the overnight assault on logistics and manufacturing infrastructure in the Kyiv region. Ukrainian officials have not yet released a full damage assessment for either site, though the scale of destruction at the logistics hub alone is expected to run into significant financial losses given the size of the facility and the volume of goods stored there.

Investigation Opened Into Possible War Crime

In the aftermath of the strike, Ukrainian law enforcement moved quickly to open a formal investigation. Investigators confirmed that criminal proceedings have been launched under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the statute covering violations of the laws and customs of war, as authorities work to establish the precise circumstances of the strike and determine whether it constitutes a war crime under Ukrainian and international law.

Patrol police response teams, investigative and operational units, and bomb disposal technicians from the capital region were dispatched to the site alongside rescue crews, both to assist with the emergency response and to begin gathering evidence for the criminal case. Officials say the investigation will examine whether the targeted facility had any legitimate military function or whether it was purely civilian logistics infrastructure, a distinction that is central to determining whether the strike violated the laws of armed conflict.

Part of a Wider Pattern of Strikes

The attack on the Bucha district logistics hub is the latest in a string of strikes on warehouse and storage infrastructure that have hit both sides of the conflict in recent days. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilian logistics and storage facilities as part of a broader campaign to disrupt supply chains and economic activity deep behind the front lines, a charge Moscow has consistently denied, characterising such facilities as legitimate military-linked targets.

As cleanup operations continue at the site, emergency services say they are continuing to monitor the area for any signs of the fire reigniting, while structural engineers begin the process of assessing what remains of the two destroyed warehouse buildings and the surrounding facilities that sustained damage in the blaze.
