The Attack on US Forces in Jordan

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the two service members were killed in action on July 17 as American and partner forces worked to defend against Iranian ballistic missile and drone strikes in Jordan. A third service member remains missing, while four others were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan; all four have since been discharged. Additional personnel who sustained minor injuries have returned to duty. CENTCOM has withheld the identities of the fallen troops until 24 hours after their next of kin are notified, and has not disclosed the exact location of the strike within Jordan.

Reports citing military officials indicate at least two Iranian ballistic missiles struck the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, which hosts American troops and fighter jets, with video circulating on social media showing the missile impacts and heavy smoke rising from the site. The deaths bring the US military toll in the broader conflict to 16 since fighting first erupted earlier this year, with hundreds of other troops injured over the course of the war. More than 50,000 US military personnel are currently deployed across the Middle East, CENTCOM said.

The attack came amid a broader night of Iranian strikes across the region. Jordan's armed forces said they intercepted ten Iranian missiles early Saturday, while Kuwait reported that Iranian attacks struck an oil facility and caused fires in residential areas from falling debris, injuring several firefighters and an oil-sector worker. Qatar's Foreign Ministry condemned what it called "renewed attacks" by Iran against Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, describing them as a violation of the sovereignty of the targeted countries and of the UN Charter. Qatar specifically flagged the targeting of electricity and water desalination infrastructure in Kuwait as crossing "all red lines."

The US Response

In retaliation, US forces carried out fresh airstrikes on Iranian targets, with CENTCOM saying the strikes hit surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage and maritime capabilities. The strikes were carried out using fighter jets, aerial drones and warships, targeting what CENTCOM described as "dozens of Iranian military targets such as coastal surveillance and air defense sites, military logistics infrastructure, and maritime capabilities."

The latest round of US strikes reportedly marks the eighth consecutive night of American military action against Iran since a fragile ceasefire between the two countries collapsed last week. Earlier strikes this week included an attack on a bridge in Iran's southern Kahurestan province and the destruction of an Iranian port surveillance tower, according to imagery reviewed by US news outlets, though such footage could not be independently verified.

Iran has said it has suspended its commitments under an interim peace deal with Washington amid the exchange of strikes on infrastructure and military sites, with Tehran accusing the US of having violated its own commitments under that agreement first.

Widening Regional Fallout

The conflict has increasingly drawn in countries across the region beyond Iran and the United States. In Lebanon, at least 33 Lebanese soldiers have died since Israel began expanded operations in the country's south in March, according to a mid-July release from the UN Security Council, and the US Embassy in Beirut has renewed warnings urging Americans not to travel to Lebanon and to reconsider travel through the wider Middle East given the volatile security environment.

Earlier in the conflict, Iranian strikes on the United Arab Emirates killed three foreign workers and injured dozens more, while a previous wave of Iranian attacks on Jordan in late February saw missiles and drones cross into Jordanian airspace, prompting interceptions by Jordanian and American air defenses.

Political and Strategic Stakes

The killing of American troops represents a significant escalation with echoes of a similar episode in early 2024, when an Iran-backed militia drone strike killed three US soldiers at a base in Jordan, prompting the US to strike more than 85 targets across Iraq and Syria in response. Officials and analysts will be watching closely whether the current round of retaliatory strikes remains focused on Iranian military infrastructure in the region or whether it widens further, given the scale of the ongoing air campaign and the growing list of countries reporting Iranian strikes on their territory.

With Iranian attacks now touching Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar-adjacent waters and the UAE, and with US strikes continuing deep inside Iranian territory, the conflict shows little sign of the de-escalation that the collapsed ceasefire had briefly offered. US officials have not indicated a timetable for when the current campaign might wind down.
