privately built Indian rocket to do so and placing India among an elite club of just three nations with private orbital launch capability, alongside the United States and China.
A Textbook Launch
Vikram-1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India's primary spaceport, at 12:05 p.m. India Standard Time on Saturday, following a 35-minute delay caused by a technical issue detected at the T-minus 5-minute mark in the countdown. Once cleared for launch, the four-stage, 23-metre-tall rocket performed flawlessly, closely following its planned trajectory as its three solid-fuel stages fired in sequence.
The mission, named "Aagaman" — Sanskrit for "arrival" — culminated with the deployment of a liquid-propellant kick stage known as the Orbital Adjustment Module, which fired for approximately six minutes to precisely place the rocket's payloads into their designated orbit. Skyroot confirmed that the upper stage successfully reached its planned 450-kilometre low Earth orbit within 15 to 17 minutes of liftoff, prompting the mission director to declare the flight "a grand success" to cheers from the control room.
What Vikram-1 Carried
The inaugural flight carried two cubesats into orbit: one built by Skyroot itself, and another developed by fellow Indian space startup Grahaa Space. While modest in payload size — Vikram-1 is designed to carry up to 350 kilograms to low Earth orbit — the successful demonstration validates the rocket's design and clears the way for Skyroot to begin commercial satellite-launch operations.
Vikram-1 is a small-satellite launch vehicle built almost entirely from carbon-composite materials, making it one of the world's few all-composite orbital rockets. Its first stage is powered by the solid-fuelled Kalam 1000 motor generating 1,000 kilonewtons of thrust, with subsequent stages progressively reducing thrust for precision orbital insertion.
A Milestone Years in the Making
Saturday's success builds on Skyroot's earlier breakthrough in November 2022, when its suborbital Vikram-S rocket became the first privately developed Indian launch vehicle to reach space, in a mission called "Prarambh," or "beginning." That technology demonstration validated key innovations, including the company's carbon-fibre rocket structures and 3D-printed thrusters, paving the way for the more ambitious orbital-class Vikram-1.
Founded in 2018 and based in Hyderabad, Skyroot Aerospace has emerged as a flagship player in India's fast-growing private space sector, which was opened to private companies by the government in 2020. The company counts former ISRO chairman S. Somanath among its honorary advisors, reflecting close ties between India's state-run space programme and its emerging commercial ecosystem. Skyroot has credited both the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and IN-SPACe, the government body responsible for authorising and promoting private space activity, for their support in enabling access to the launch site and regulatory clearances.
Skyroot co-founder Pawan Kumar Chandana hailed the achievement, saying India was proud to be "the fastest-growing space tech ecosystem in the world," and calling the successful first-attempt orbital launch "one of the biggest milestones ever in India's space sector." He added that the achievement "still feels like a dream."
Funding and What Comes Next
The successful launch comes on the heels of a significant financial boost for the company: Skyroot raised $60 million in May 2026 to scale up production of Vikram-1 and to develop a larger, more capable vehicle, Vikram-2, which is expected to carry heavier payloads using a cryogenic upper stage for missions to low Earth orbit and Sun-synchronous orbit.
With Vikram-1 now proven, Skyroot is positioned to begin regular commercial launches, tapping into the growing global demand for dedicated small-satellite launch services — a market segment increasingly vital as companies and governments deploy constellations of small satellites for communications, earth observation, and scientific research.
A New Space Era for India
Industry observers have described the Vikram-1 launch as marking "the dawn of a new space era" for India, underscoring how the country's space ambitions are no longer confined to its government-run programme. For decades, ISRO has been the sole gateway to orbit for India, delivering notable achievements including the Chandrayaan lunar missions and the Mangalyaan Mars orbiter. Saturday's launch signals a structural shift, opening the door for private Indian companies to compete directly in the global commercial launch market.
With Vikram-1's successful debut, India joins the United States and China as the only nations where a privately built rocket has independently reached orbit, a distinction that positions the country's private space sector as a serious contender on the world stage. As Skyroot moves toward regular commercial operations and continues development of the larger Vikram-2 vehicle, the milestone is likely to be remembered as a defining moment in India's journey toward becoming a major global hub for commercial spaceflight.
