NEW DELHI, August 10, 2026 — India has crossed a landmark 300 GW in installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced,

marking one of the most significant milestones yet in the country's clean energy transition. The ministry's statement, issued Sunday, put the exact figure at 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, representing more than 60 per cent of India's target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

A Decade of Rapid Expansion

Non-fossil sources — comprising solar, wind, hydro, bio-power and nuclear energy — now account for over 54 per cent of India's total installed electricity generation capacity, which stands at approximately 552 GW. The scale of the shift becomes clear when set against the country's position just over a decade ago, when clean energy capacity was a fraction of today's total.

Solar power remains the dominant driver of the transition, with installed capacity climbing to 164.59 GW from just 2.8 GW in 2014. Wind energy has followed a similarly steep trajectory, rising from 21 GW to 58.14 GW over the same period. The remaining non-fossil capacity is made up of 57.24 GW of hydro power, spanning both large and small installations, 11.75 GW of bio-power, and 8.78 GW of nuclear power.

The pace of addition has itself been accelerating. During the 2025-26 financial year alone, India installed a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity, with solar power contributing 44.6 GW and wind power adding a further 6 GW — underscoring how much of the recent growth has been concentrated in a single year.

Generation Output Keeps Pace

The expansion in installed capacity has translated into a corresponding rise in actual electricity generation. Renewable energy output has grown from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26, according to the ministry, indicating that the added capacity is being meaningfully utilised rather than remaining idle on paper.

Domestic Manufacturing Push

Alongside capacity additions, the government has emphasised building domestic manufacturing capabilities to reduce reliance on imported equipment and strengthen supply chain independence. Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which supports high-efficiency, indigenously produced solar modules, the enlisted capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules has crossed 200 GW — up from just 2.3 GW in 2014. Officials have framed this manufacturing build-out as central to India's push for an "Aatmanirbhar" or self-reliant energy ecosystem.

The MNRE credited the milestone to a combination of policy enablers and implementation frameworks rolled out over the past decade, describing the achievement as translating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of national energy security and climate action into measurable outcomes. The ministry's implementation efforts have been steered administratively by MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi.

Momentum Ahead of Bharat Renewable Energy Summit

The milestone arrives ahead of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, scheduled for November 2-5 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event is expected to bring together representatives from roughly three dozen countries, and is intended to connect India's renewable energy policy objectives with international capital, including pension funds and large financial institutions, to finance the next phase of infrastructure development.

Challenges Remain

Even as the headline numbers mark clear progress, industry observers note that the sector continues to face structural hurdles. These include land availability constraints for new solar and wind projects, the reliability of power purchase agreements, and the financial health of state electricity distribution companies, whose delayed payments have historically posed risks to renewable developers. Managing the intermittent nature of solar and wind supply also remains a technical challenge, one that is expected to require sustained investment in battery storage and grid balancing solutions as capacity continues to scale toward the 2030 target.

With 300 GW now in place and roughly 200 GW still required to meet the 500 GW goal within the next four years, the government's ability to sustain the current pace of annual additions — averaging well above 40 GW in solar alone during the past year — will be closely watched as a test of whether India can meet its clean energy commitments on schedule.
