Manipur Violence Escalates

Manipur Violence Escalates: Kuki Groups Allegedly Attack Thoyee Tangkhul Village in Ukhrul

News Report:

Fresh tensions have erupted in Manipur’s hill districts after suspected Kuki armed groups

allegedly launched an attack on Thoyee Tangkhul village in Ukhrul district, triggering fear and instability in the region.

According to local sources, the incident took place in and around the Thoyee hill range, where villagers—many of them engaged in daily activities such as farming—reportedly came under sudden gunfire. Eyewitness accounts suggest that armed miscreants opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee for safety.

The attack is believed to be part of the continuing ethnic tensions between Kuki groups and Tangkhul Naga communities in the region. Thoyee, a Tangkhul-majority village located near the Ukhrul–Imphal corridor, has been a sensitive zone due to its proximity to inter-community boundaries.

Following the firing, local youth groups reportedly mobilized in response, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire between the two sides. The situation further escalated when several civilians travelling along nearby routes were allegedly intercepted and detained by suspected militants in adjoining areas, raising concerns over civilian safety.

Security agencies have been alerted, and additional forces are being deployed to the affected areas to prevent further escalation. Officials are closely monitoring the situation, though no official casualty figures have been confirmed so far.

This latest incident adds to a series of violent episodes reported in Manipur’s Ukhrul and adjoining districts in recent weeks, including firing incidents and attacks on villages that have left several injured and heightened ethnic tensions.

The broader conflict between Kuki and Naga groups in Manipur has deep historical roots, often driven by territorial disputes, ethnic identity, and political demands. Over the years, such clashes have resulted in repeated cycles of violence, displacement, and insecurity for local populations.

Authorities have appealed for calm and urged all communities to maintain peace, while civil society organisations continue to call for dialogue and stronger security measures to protect vulnerable villages.

Further details are awaited as the situation develops and official statements emerge.
