Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has received official approval to arrest self-styled godman Ashok Kharat in connection with an alleged multi-crore financial fraud and money laundering investigation that has attracted major public attention across Maharashtra.
Officials familiar with the case stated that the agency intensified its probe after uncovering what investigators describe as suspicious financial transactions, illegal asset accumulation, and possible diversion of funds through multiple shell entities.
According to sources, the ED secured the necessary legal clearance after examining evidence gathered during recent searches and interrogation of individuals linked to Kharat’s religious and charitable network. Investigators are reportedly probing allegations that large sums collected in the name of spiritual programs, donations, and welfare activities were diverted into private accounts and properties.
The case gained momentum following complaints from several devotees and investors who accused the godman and his associates of financial cheating and misrepresentation. Authorities are also examining links between the alleged fraud and real estate transactions carried out in Maharashtra and neighbouring states. Officials believe the financial trail may involve benami properties and undisclosed investments.
Sources within the agency indicated that multiple bank accounts, digital records, and financial documents have already been seized during raids conducted earlier this month. The ED is also coordinating with local police and financial intelligence agencies to track the movement of funds and identify additional beneficiaries connected to the alleged racket.
Legal experts say the arrest approval marks a significant escalation in the investigation and could lead to further questioning of close aides and business associates. If arrested, Ashok Kharat may be produced before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court for custodial interrogation.
The development has triggered intense political and social reactions, particularly because the godman reportedly maintained links with influential individuals in business and local politics. Supporters of Kharat have denied all allegations and termed the investigation politically motivated, while critics have demanded strict action and full disclosure of the financial network allegedly operating under the guise of spiritual activities.
The Enforcement Directorate has not yet released a detailed public statement on the matter, but officials indicate that further action is likely in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
