Kerala Congress Faces Revolt

“Kerala Congress Faces Revolt”

Report by Y-Trendz

A major political storm is brewing inside the Congress-led opposition space in Kerala as factional battles, leadership tussles, and seat-sharing disputes threaten to weaken the party

just as it prepares for government formation and post-election power negotiations.

The latest developments indicate that the Congress high command is struggling to contain internal rebellion from multiple camps within the party and allied Kerala Congress factions. What was initially seen as a routine leadership consultation has now escalated into an open show of strength between rival groups.

CM Race Turns Into Public Power Battle

The immediate trigger for the unrest is the battle over the Chief Minister’s post after the massive victory of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Reports suggest that supporters of senior leaders V.D. Satheesan and K.C. Venugopal have taken the rivalry beyond closed-door meetings and onto the streets. Flex boards, public demonstrations, and political mobilisations are reportedly being used to pressure the central leadership.

Congress observers sent by the high command have been holding marathon consultations with MLAs and alliance partners in Thiruvananthapuram, but no consensus appears to have emerged so far.

The Congress Legislature Party has formally authorised the high command to decide the CM face, but insiders claim the move was aimed at avoiding a direct split during the legislative meeting itself.

Seat Disputes Fuel Rebel Sentiment

The rebellion inside the Congress ecosystem did not begin after the election. Cracks had already appeared during candidate selection for the 2026 Assembly polls.

Several reports earlier highlighted anger among senior MPs and regional leaders over denial of Assembly tickets. Internal resistance reportedly emerged in constituencies like Kannur and Kuttanad, where rival factions openly challenged official decisions.

The dispute became especially intense in Kannur, where senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran allegedly resisted the party’s “no sitting MPs in Assembly polls” formula. The confrontation exposed deeper factional divisions between organisational leaders and district-level power centres.

Political observers believe these unresolved tensions are now resurfacing during cabinet formation discussions.

Kerala Congress Factions Add To Instability

The broader Kerala Congress family — known historically for repeated splits and mergers — is also witnessing turbulence.

Different Kerala Congress factions have been negotiating political relevance after the election results. Some leaders are pushing for greater representation in the new power structure, while others are reportedly unhappy over allocation of ministerial positions and regional influence.

Earlier this year, Kerala Congress factions within the NDA and UDF witnessed merger talks, counter-alignments, and ideological repositioning.

Meanwhile, the electoral defeat of several Kerala Congress (M) leaders in traditional strongholds has further intensified uncertainty inside the party structure.

Congress Victory Overshadowed By Internal Friction

Ironically, the revolt comes immediately after one of the Congress-led alliance’s strongest performances in decades.

The UDF secured a massive mandate in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, winning more than 100 seats and ending a decade of Left rule.

However, instead of celebrating a smooth transition to power, the alliance is now battling perception problems over factionalism and leadership ambition.

Political analysts say the biggest danger for the Congress is not opposition attacks from the Left or the BJP, but the possibility of internal instability damaging governance before the new administration fully settles in.

BJP Watching Closely

The BJP, which made electoral gains in Kerala this time, is expected to closely monitor the Congress infighting.

Any prolonged instability within the Congress-led government could provide the BJP an opportunity to expand its political footprint in the state, especially in urban and central Kerala constituencies where the party has shown recent growth.

What Happens Next?

The Congress high command now faces three immediate challenges:

  • Finalising the Chief Minister without alienating rival camps.

  • Balancing cabinet positions among Congress and Kerala Congress factions.

  • Preventing rebel leaders from publicly embarrassing the new government.

If handled poorly, the present revolt could evolve into long-term factional warfare inside Kerala Congress politics. If managed carefully, however, the Congress leadership may still convert its electoral victory into a stable government.

For now, Kerala politics remains in a state of suspense — with celebration giving way to intense internal negotiation.
