Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day: Celebrating the Unconditional Bond of Motherhood

Mother's Day is a global occasion dedicated to honouring mothers, motherhood, and the immense role women play in nurturing families and shaping society. Celebrated in many

countries on the second Sunday of May, Mother’s Day in 2026 falls on May 10.

Mother’s Day is observed as a tribute to the love, sacrifice, care, and emotional strength of mothers. Across the world, people express gratitude to their mothers through gifts, flowers, greeting cards, family gatherings, and heartfelt messages.

The modern form of Mother’s Day traces its origins to the United States in the early 20th century. Anna Jarvis is widely credited with initiating the movement after organising a memorial in honour of her mother in 1908. Her campaign eventually led to the official recognition of Mother’s Day in the United States in 1914.

However, the idea of honouring mothers dates back much further. Ancient civilisations such as the Greeks and Romans held festivals dedicated to mother goddesses, while Christian traditions in Europe observed “Mothering Sunday” long before the modern holiday emerged.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in diverse cultural forms worldwide. In India, the occasion has grown increasingly popular over the years, especially among younger generations and urban families. Schools, social organisations, and businesses often conduct special programmes recognising mothers and caregivers.

Beyond celebrations, the day also highlights the challenges faced by mothers globally — including maternal health, work-life balance, unpaid caregiving responsibilities, and women’s welfare. International organisations frequently use the occasion to raise awareness about maternal healthcare, nutrition, and gender equality.

For many, Mother’s Day is not only about celebration but also remembrance. People honour mothers who are no longer alive through prayers, tributes, and acts of gratitude inspired by their memory.

Motherhood continues to be regarded as one of humanity’s most powerful emotional and social bonds, transcending language, culture, and borders. Mother’s Day serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of mothers in shaping individuals, families, and societies.
