Narendra Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday as part of his multi-nation diplomatic tour, receiving a grand welcome and one of the country’s highest state honours during his visit.
Prime Minister Modi was conferred with the prestigious “Royal Order of the Polar Star – Commander Grand Cross,” Sweden’s highest honour awarded to a Head of Government. The award was presented in recognition of his contribution toward strengthening India-Sweden relations and expanding cooperation in trade, technology, innovation, defence, and sustainability.
The honour was conferred by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden during an official ceremony in Gothenburg. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the recognition symbolizes the deepening friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi dedicated the award to the people of India, calling it “an honour for 140 crore Indians” and a reflection of the growing global respect for India’s rising international role.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson personally received PM Modi at Gothenburg Airport in a special diplomatic gesture. Reports also noted that Swedish Air Force fighter jets escorted the Prime Minister’s aircraft after it entered Swedish airspace, underlining the significance of the visit.
During bilateral talks, both leaders elevated India-Sweden relations to a “Strategic Partnership” and adopted a new Joint Action Plan for 2026–2030. Discussions focused on:
Trade and investments
Defence cooperation
Artificial Intelligence
Green transition technologies
Climate action
Space and innovation
Resilient supply chains
Bilateral trade between India and Sweden reportedly crossed USD 7.75 billion in 2025, with both countries expressing interest in expanding cooperation in emerging technologies and industrial innovation.
The visit also carried strong cultural symbolism. PM Modi and Swedish leadership exchanged commemorative gifts inspired by the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, highlighting the historic cultural links between India and Sweden.
This marks PM Modi’s 31st international honour from a foreign nation, further strengthening his diplomatic profile on the global stage.
