Visakhapatnam, June 9: A major industrial accident at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Vizag Steel Plant) has claimed at least eight lives and left several workers critically injured after a ladle carrying
molten metal reportedly collapsed or exploded inside the steel melting facility.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred in the Steel Melting Shop section of the plant when a large quantity of molten steel spilled onto the work area. The extreme heat triggered a massive fire, trapping workers who had little time to escape. Emergency response teams, including fire and rescue personnel, rushed to the scene to contain the blaze and assist victims.
Officials stated that eight workers were killed, while at least six others suffered severe burn injuries and were shifted to hospitals for treatment. Some reports indicate the injured remain in critical condition.
The accident has sparked renewed concerns over industrial safety standards at one of India's largest steel manufacturing facilities. Trade unions and worker representatives have demanded a thorough investigation into the causes of the mishap, including possible equipment failure, maintenance issues, and adherence to safety protocols.
Plant management and government authorities have launched inquiries into the incident. Reports indicate that an external investigation committee has been tasked with determining the exact cause of the accident and recommending measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The disaster is being described as one of the most serious industrial accidents in the recent history of the Visakhapatnam steel complex, casting a shadow over the region's industrial sector and reigniting debates about worker safety in heavy industries.
