Cyprus's Desire to Buy BrahMos

The Mediterranean nation of Cyprus is reportedly exploring the possibility of purchasing India’s advanced BrahMos missile system along with indigenous kamikaze drones as part of its military modernization strategy.

The development highlights the growing international interest in India’s expanding defence manufacturing capabilities and its emergence as a major arms exporter.

According to defence and strategic affairs reports, Cyprus has shown keen interest in acquiring the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed by BrahMos Aerospace. The missile is regarded as one of the world’s fastest operational cruise missiles, capable of striking land and naval targets with high precision. Defence experts believe such a system could significantly strengthen Cyprus’s coastal defence and deterrence capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

In addition to BrahMos, Cyprus is also evaluating Indian-made loitering munitions, commonly known as kamikaze drones. These unmanned systems are designed to hover over target zones before striking enemy assets with precision. Indian defence manufacturers have recently gained international attention for producing cost-effective and combat-tested drone technologies.

The interest from Cyprus comes amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Mediterranean and increasing emphasis on modern warfare technologies. Observers note that smaller nations are now investing heavily in missile defence systems, surveillance networks, and autonomous combat platforms to enhance strategic preparedness.

India’s defence exports have witnessed sharp growth over the last few years under the government’s “Make in India” and defence self-reliance initiatives. Countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East are increasingly approaching Indian firms for missile systems, radars, artillery, drones, and naval equipment.

Earlier, the Philippines became the first foreign customer for the BrahMos missile system after signing a major defence agreement with India. The possible Cyprus deal, if finalized, would further strengthen India’s defence diplomacy footprint in Europe and the Mediterranean region.

Strategic analysts believe the discussions also reflect growing trust in Indian military technology, especially after the demonstrated effectiveness of missile and drone systems in recent global conflicts. The proposed cooperation may additionally open opportunities for joint training, defence partnerships, and technological collaboration between India and Cyprus.

While no official agreement has yet been announced, the reported interest marks another important step in India’s ambition to become a leading global defence exporter and strategic technology partner.
