India has successfully hosted the inaugural edition of Exercise PRAGATI 2026, a major multinational military exercise aimed at enhancing cooperation, interoperability, and collective preparedness among regional armed forces. The exercise was conducted at the Umroi Military Station in Meghalaya and brought together troops from India and 12 friendly nations across the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian regions.
PRAGATI, which stands for Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region, is a new military engagement initiative launched by the Indian Army to strengthen regional security cooperation. The exercise reflects India's growing role as a security partner in the Indo-Pacific and its commitment to fostering defense ties with neighboring and friendly countries.
The participating nations included Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, alongside Indian troops. More than 400 military personnel participated in the exercise.
The training focused primarily on counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in semi-mountainous and jungle terrain. Participating soldiers underwent intensive training in ambush and counter-ambush drills, jungle warfare, room intervention operations, improvised explosive device (IED) detection, casualty evacuation, rock craft, slithering, and other specialized military skills. Mixed teams from different countries trained together to improve coordination and operational compatibility.
A key feature of the exercise was a 72-hour validation operation that tested the ability of participating forces to conduct joint missions under realistic operational conditions. Military officials said the exercise demonstrated growing trust and interoperability among the participating nations.
Alongside the military drills, India showcased indigenous defense technologies and equipment through an exhibition organized with the support of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The display highlighted India's expanding defense manufacturing capabilities and provided opportunities for defense cooperation and exports.
Senior military leaders from participating countries also held bilateral discussions on defense cooperation, regional security challenges, and future military engagements. The interactions reinforced India's "Neighbourhood First" and "Act East" policies while promoting stronger military-to-military relations across the region.
Defense analysts view Exercise PRAGATI as an important step in strengthening regional security architecture and building collective readiness against emerging threats. The successful completion of the maiden edition has laid the foundation for future editions and deeper defense collaboration among participating nations.
Bottom Line: Exercise PRAGATI 2026 has positioned Meghalaya as a significant hub for international military cooperation while reinforcing India's role as a leading security partner in the Indian Ocean Region and the broader Indo-Pacific.
