Yerevan, Armenia: Armenia's Republic Day military parade has drawn international attention after prominently showcasing a range of Indian-made defence systems, highlighting the rapidly growing strategic partnership between New Delhi and Yerevan.
The parade, held in Armenia's capital Yerevan on May 28, featured several Indian-origin weapons and military platforms acquired by the Armenian Armed Forces in recent years. Defence analysts view the display as a significant endorsement of India's expanding role as a global defence exporter.
Among the Indian systems reportedly displayed were the Akash surface-to-air missile system, Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher, ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System), MArG 155-BR self-propelled artillery system, and the Swathi Weapon Locating Radar. Several of these platforms were seen publicly in Armenia for the first time.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan described the event as a presentation of Armenia's "new army" equipped with modern weapons and technologies. The parade also featured military equipment sourced from France, Iran, China, and domestic Armenian defence manufacturers.
India has emerged as one of Armenia's most important defence partners since 2022, with multiple defence contracts signed between the two countries. Reports indicate that Armenia has purchased a wide range of Indian systems, including air defence, artillery, rocket launchers, radar systems, and anti-drone equipment.
Military observers say the public display of Indian weapons sends a strong message about India's growing defence manufacturing capabilities and its increasing presence in international arms markets. The development is also seen as strategically significant given Armenia's security concerns and its efforts to diversify defence procurement beyond traditional suppliers.
The parade marked the first major Armenian military parade in nearly a decade and served as a showcase of newly acquired military hardware. For India, the event represents another milestone in the country's push to become a major exporter of indigenous defence technology under the "Make in India" initiative.
As Indian-made defence systems continue to find overseas buyers, Armenia's Republic Day parade stands as a visible symbol of India's rising stature in the global defence industry.
