US plans to shrink forces

Washington: The United States is reportedly considering plans to reduce the number of American military forces directly available to North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a move that has triggered debate among Western allies over the future of European security and burden-sharing within the alliance.

According to defence and diplomatic sources, the proposal is part of a broader strategic review being undertaken by the administration of President Donald Trump. The review reportedly focuses on

reducing long-term overseas military commitments while encouraging European NATO members to increase their own defence spending and operational readiness.

Officials familiar with the discussions said the United States may scale back some troop deployments, logistical commitments, and rapid-response capabilities assigned to NATO operations in Europe. However, Washington is expected to maintain its core commitments under NATO’s collective defence framework, including obligations under Article 5 of the alliance treaty.

President Trump has repeatedly argued that European nations must take greater responsibility for their own security and contribute more financially to NATO defence structures. During recent remarks, Trump reportedly stated that the United States “cannot continue carrying the entire burden” of Europe’s military protection.

The possible restructuring has raised concerns among several European allies, particularly countries located near Russia’s borders, where fears over regional security remain high following the prolonged conflict in Ukraine. Diplomats from Eastern European nations are said to be seeking clarification from Washington regarding the scale and timing of any potential reductions.

NATO officials, meanwhile, stressed that discussions among member states are ongoing and that alliance coordination remains strong. Several European governments have already increased defence budgets in recent years, partly in response to repeated American calls for higher military spending.

Security analysts believe the proposed shift reflects Washington’s growing focus on the Indo-Pacific region and strategic competition with China. Experts say the United States may increasingly expect European allies to manage more regional security responsibilities independently while America concentrates resources on Asia and emerging global threats.

Despite the reports, no final decision has yet been officially announced by the White House or the Pentagon. Discussions are expected to continue in the lead-up to upcoming NATO consultations and defence meetings.
