KOLKATA: In a major political development, the West Bengal government led by Suvendu Adhikari underwent a significant cabinet expansion on Monday, with 35 legislators taking the oath of office and secrecy at Lok Bhavan in Kolkata. The swearing-in ceremony was administered by Governor R. N. Ravi.
The large-scale expansion takes the strength of the Council of Ministers to 41 members, making it one of the most important administrative exercises since the formation of the BJP-led government in the state. The move is aimed at strengthening governance, improving regional representation and ensuring smoother implementation of government policies across West Bengal.
Several prominent BJP leaders and legislators were inducted into the ministry. Among the notable names are Swapan Dasgupta, Tapas Roy, Shankar Ghosh and Ashok Dinda, reflecting a mix of experienced politicians and new faces in the administration.
The cabinet expansion comes just weeks after the new government assumed office. Political observers view the move as an effort by Chief Minister Adhikari to build a full-fledged governing team capable of handling key departments and delivering on electoral promises.
Portfolio allocation is expected to follow shortly, with attention now turning to which ministers will be entrusted with crucial departments such as finance, home, education, health and infrastructure. The expanded ministry is expected to play a central role in shaping the government's agenda for the coming years.
The oath-taking ceremony drew political leaders, party workers and senior officials, marking a new chapter in the functioning of the West Bengal government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's leadership.
