AMITABH JHUNJHUNWALA IN BANK FRAUD CASE
Report by Y-Trendz
MUMBAI: In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into alleged banking irregularities linked to Reliance Communications (RCom), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested former Reliance Communications Group Managing Director Amitabh Jhunjhunwala. The arrest is connected to an alleged bank loan fraud case involving losses of approximately ₹2,929 crore to public sector lender State Bank of India (SBI).
According to CBI officials, Jhunjhunwala played a key role in securing loans and overseeing financial operations within the Reliance Communications Group. Investigators allege that the loans were misused and that the company subsequently defaulted on repayments, leading to substantial losses for lending institutions.
The former RCom executive was already lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail in connection with a separate Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation. Following the issuance of production warrants by a special court, he was brought to Mumbai where the CBI formally arrested him in the bank fraud case.
The arrest marks the latest development in a broader probe into alleged financial misconduct involving Reliance Group companies. Earlier, the CBI had arrested other senior RCom executives and filed charges against multiple individuals, including company officials and bank personnel, as part of its investigation.
Investigators are examining allegations of loan diversion, misuse of sanctioned credit facilities and transactions involving associated entities. The agency is also looking into the roles played by various officials in the sanctioning and utilization of the funds.
Legal proceedings in the case are expected to continue as the CBI seeks to establish accountability for the alleged fraud. The investigation remains under close scrutiny due to the scale of the alleged financial losses and its implications for India's banking sector.
