Boosts India's Energy Hopes

New Delhi, June 6: India has reported a significant natural gas discovery in the Andaman Sea, a development that could strengthen the country's long-term energy security and reduce dependence on
imported fuels. State-owned Oil India Limited (OIL) announced the presence of natural gas in its exploratory well named Sri Vijayapuram-3, located about 15 kilometers off the east coast of the Andaman Islands.
The discovery was confirmed during production testing at a depth of more than 1,900 meters in the Eocene geological formation. Continuous gas flaring and pressure build-up during testing established the presence of natural gas in the well.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described the find as evidence of the "ocean of energy opportunities" in the Andaman basin. The government believes the discovery could open a new chapter in India's offshore exploration efforts.
Importantly, this is the second successful hydrocarbon discovery out of three exploratory wells drilled by Oil India in the offshore Andaman block. The company has already begun appraisal studies, seismic data analysis, and further exploration work to determine the size and commercial viability of the reserves.
Experts caution that while the discovery is promising, it is still too early to estimate the total volume of recoverable gas. Additional drilling, testing, and infrastructure development will be required before commercial production can begin. The process could take several years.
The discovery forms part of India's broader offshore exploration strategy under the Samudra Manthan Mission, which aims to unlock hydrocarbon resources in deepwater and ultra-deepwater regions. If future appraisal confirms large reserves, the Andaman basin could emerge as one of India's most important energy-producing regions.
