Only 8 MLAs, 6 MPs Attend Key Meeting
Report by Y-Trendz
Kolkata, June 6: The political crisis within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) deepened on Friday as party chief Mamata Banerjee held an emergency meeting at her Kalighat residence amid an open
rebellion by a large section of party legislators and parliamentarians. Reports indicate that only eight MLAs and six MPs attended the crucial gathering, highlighting the growing challenges facing the party leadership.
According to party leaders present at the meeting, the Mamata camp is preparing to approach the Calcutta High Court to challenge the recognition of rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. Senior TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee described the appointment as "illegal" and said legal action would be taken soon.
The rebellion erupted after a group of dissident legislators claimed the support of nearly 58-60 TMC MLAs and sought separate recognition within the Assembly. The rebel faction has emerged as the most serious challenge to Mamata Banerjee's leadership since the party's formation.
The low attendance at Friday's meeting has intensified speculation that more lawmakers could drift toward the rebel camp. Political observers view the turnout as a sign of the widening divide within the party following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal.
TMC leaders, however, maintained that the meeting was limited to select members of the party's National Working Committee and should not be interpreted as a measure of support within the organization.
With the legal battle set to move to court and internal divisions showing no signs of easing, the coming days could prove decisive for the future of the Trinamool Congress and the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.
Editor's Note: Some reports circulating on social media mention different attendance figures. Most mainstream reports currently indicate that 8 MLAs and 6 MPs attended the meeting, while claims of 4 MLAs and 7 MPs have not been consistently confirmed.
