Oslo, June 6: Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, capping off a remarkable comeback with a final-round
victory over Germany's Vincent Keymer.
The 20-year-old chess sensation from Chennai secured the title after defeating Keymer in the tenth and final round. His triumph came after an extraordinary run of four consecutive classical victories, including wins over world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and reigning world champion D. Gukesh.
Praggnanandhaa's path to the championship was far from straightforward. After suffering setbacks in the early rounds and finding himself near the bottom of the standings, he produced one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the tournament to emerge as champion.
The victory is considered one of the biggest achievements of his career and further strengthens India's growing influence in world chess. Winning Norway Chess is especially significant because the tournament is regarded as one of the strongest and most prestigious events on the international chess calendar.
Even Carlsen, competing on home soil, praised Praggnanandhaa's achievement after the event. The Indian star's victory has drawn admiration from chess experts and sports personalities worldwide.
With this landmark triumph, Praggnanandhaa has added another major title to his rapidly growing list of achievements and reinforced his status as one of the brightest stars in global chess.
